Where do you stand?

  • Shins and legs parallel

  • Skis at same edge angle

  • Balanced fore/aft

Tracking:
The direction that the knees flex

Where do you stand?

  • The feet hold the skis on edge
  • The feet articulate to fine-tune edging and balance

Articulating the foot

The feet must be able to tilt on and off edge

Where do you stand?

Optimal in-boot alignment yields:

  • Symmetric angles

  • Parallel legs

  • Skis that work in unison

In-boot alignment

Feet & Footbeds

  • The foot is your base of support

  • Some feet need "help" to ski well

  • The footbed sets up your foot to ski well

  • It should meet the mechanical needs of your feet

  • Considerations are support & articulation

Is your foot good for skiing?

  • Can it roll your skis on and off edge?
  • Can it hold your skis on edge?
  • Does it absorb vibrations to keep the skis tracking?
  • Can you adjust your balance and edging with subtle foot movements?
  • Is it comfortable?

What's your foot type?

"Normal foot"
  • Upright heelbone
  • Average range of motion
  • Stable when weighted
  • Strong lever with flexibility

What's your foot type?

"Normal foot" "Rigid, high-arched foot"
  • Upright heelbone
  • Average range of motion
  • Stable when weighted
  • Strong lever with flexibility
  • Heelbone rolled toward outside
  • Little or no range of motion
  • Very strong lever
  • Little finesse or articulation on edge

What's your foot type?

"Normal foot" "Rigid, high-arched foot" "Flexible, overpronated foot"
  • Upright heelbone
  • Average range of motion
  • Stable when weighted
  • Strong lever with flexibility
  • Heelbone rolled toward outside
  • Little or no range of motion
  • Very strong lever
  • Little finesse or articulation on edge
  • Heelbone rolled toward inside
  • Large range of motion
  • Weak lever

Types of Footbeds

  • Rigid
  • High-density
  • Soft

Arch Support

  • The arch must be able to flatten for the foot to help in edging

  • The footbed arch should yield under pressure from the foot

  • The footbed material should "spring back" when the foot stops pressing on it

Compressible Arch Support

Harb Ski Systems footbed benefits

Individualized to shape and biomechanical needs

  • Hindfoot support angle

  • Forefoot to hindfoot angle

  • Arch height

  • Flexibility

Non-optimal alignments

  • Bowlegged and knock-kneed

Results...

  • Harder to roll skis on or off edge
  • Difficulty with edge grip - too much or too little
  • Joint stress
  • Inefficiency
  • Asymmetry

Non-optimal alignment:
Knock-kneed

Non-optimal alignment:
Bowlegged

Stand Corrected!
